MWERENI INTEGRATED SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND, AFRICA
(Please Read Below)
(Blind students singing us a traditional 'welcoming' song.)
The Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind is located in Moshi, Tanzania. The school was founded in 1934 and is only one of 5 schools in all of Tanzania that educates blind children. The school has 600 students from the ages of 5-17, including 50 blind students with an operating budget of $3,000 a year. The majority of the blind students are orphaned from birth by their families.
(Max Ashton, 13 years old, presenting a Braille writer as a gift to the school.)
In June of 2009, we had the honor and privilege to work directly with the school and donate over $50,000 worth of well needed gifts to the school. Our Mt. Kilimanjaro team from the Foundation for Blind Children donated 43 Braille writers, paper, magnifiers, canes, and sunglasses to the school.
(Pam Stelzer and Patrick McFarlan learning Braille from a student and teacher.)
In the coming years, K2 Adventures plans on donating money to the Mwereni Integrated School for the Blind to directly benefit the blind students. We are going to help build a much needed computer/education center so these 'eager to learn' children can be mainstreamed into society.
(Unfinished classroom at the school. A little bit of money goes a long way in construction.)
We are also going to help facilitate the building of unfinished classrooms for children to learn. Currently their classrooms have very little supplies if any.
(Living conditions for the blind students.)
We are also going to help them build much needed dormitories. Currently 50 blind students call this their home. These children sleep 4-6 in a bunk bed in a room that is 8' x 10'. These living conditions are barely humane. Children have no dressers, no blankets, no shower facilities, and less than poor bathroom conditions.
